About The Event
Andrew M. Ibrahim MD, MSc
Senior Principal, Chief Medical Officer HOK
We are delighted to announce that Andrew M. Ibrahim M.D. MSc, will be our Thinking Out Loud speaker on Thursday 20th June 2019. Andrew has a rising career as a surgeon working in the US. As well as studying architecture, Andrew’s research has been featured in several publications anticipating and evaluating the impact of “Obamacare”. He brings a unique insight and perspective to the world of health.
Andrew will share his thoughts on Health in All Design. He comments that for all the advances we continue to make in modern society, healthcare has fallen behind. We are the first generation whose life expectancy is actually lower than the one before us.
He will invite you to think about your last project and your recent stakeholder meetings to discuss a school, an office building, a university campus, a stadium and question was health a priority in your design? Did a public health or clinical professional even have a seat at the table with all the other collaborators?
Andrew will suggest that we as an industry has the privilege to design an array of buildings across many sectors and with many different functions; yet how could those be imagined with health as a priority?
You may wonder why a surgeon trained in policy spends time in an architecture firm. Andrew advocates that the boundaries are blurrier than we think, and our interconnectedness is desperately needed. If harnessing the best tools of academic medicine and lessons learned from policy can transform the way we design the spaces we occupy every day to improve our health, he cannot think of a better mission.
